By this time you have probably heard the very sad news of the passing of Father Andrew Joseph Apostoli, C.F.R. Father peacefully died December 13th, the Memorial of Saint Lucy, at 9:26 a.m. at his beloved Friary in the Bronx surrounded by his fellow priests, brothers and sisters of the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Renewal.
I was blessed to know Father Andrew for nearly 30 years and to work closely with him on a number of projects. Our collaboration deepened our friendship and allowed me to discover what an extraordinary man he was.
This year marked the 50th anniversary of Father’s priestly ordination. Father once told me he had never regretted for a single instant his decision to become a priest. His priestly ministry was the source of his joy and a blessing to everyone he encountered. Even as I mourn his passing, I am immensely grateful for Father Andrew’s “Yes” to the Lord and to a life poured out in His service.
Father Andrew served as the Spiritual Director for the Catholic Marketing Network for almost 20 years. He never missed a single event. Father always gave himself completely to these gatherings. When he wasn’t celebrating Mass, hearing confessions, or encouraging our attendees, you would usually find him in our show Chapel kneeling in front of the Blessed Sacrament, worshiping the Lord he served so faithfully.
My work within the Church has put me in the company of some of the most exceptional people on the face of the earth. They are people who have decided to serve God completely, leaving nothing for themselves; people whose love radiates so powerfully that, like Christ, they exert an inexplicable draw.
Father Andrew Apostoli was one such soul. A true man of God, he heroically lived out his calling to be an Alter Christus, another Christ. He helped me and so many others on our life journeys that will end, God willing, in the arms of our loving God.
He will be terribly missed by us all.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
