Our Sunday Visitor’s ‘The Priest’ Magazine Relaunches With New Design, Content and Vision for Assisting Today’s Catholic Clergy

The Priest magazine, a national Catholic journal serving Catholic clergy since 1924, has relaunched with a new design and editorial focus to better meet the needs of priests serving in the Church today. The redesign is premiering with the April 2017 issue.  “How humbling it is to serve brother priests,” says Father David Bonnar, editor of The Priest. “Like so much of our ministry, those whom we serve do more for us than we could ever do for them. It is our hope to assist all priests as they act in persona Christi and aim to be, in priestly life and ministry, the face of Jesus Christ. How beautiful it is when there is a smile on that face witnessing a happy and holy priesthood.”

Father Bonnar has been a priest of the Diocese of Pittsburgh for 28 years, five of which were spent serving as rector of a minor seminary and director of vocations. He also served as vicar of clergy for two years. The content in each monthly issue of The Priest has been tailored to fit the publication’s revised mission statement, which is based on the four pillars of clergy formation outlined by Pope St. John Paul II in his apostolic exhortation Pastores Dabo Vobis: “To serve Catholic priests by promoting and inviting ongoing human, spiritual, intellectual and pastoral formation.”

The Priest magazine’s timely and relevant features are designed to inspire, form and inform today’s busy priests. Revised “Homily Helps” are designed to assist priests in developing their homilies. An “In Focus” section will explore a different subject relating to the priesthood in depth in each issue. Monthly columns will center on best practices for priestly ministry in the fields of technology, parish life, and leadership. There also will be a monthly art reflection to help priests focus on the truth and beauty of the Faith as represented through sacred art. Finally, each issue will include “A Shepherd’s Voice” – a new column written by a different member of the episcopate each month, offering pastoral reflections and practical suggestions for priests.

“The redesigned The Priest magazine is a tool from which every Catholic priest, whether working in a parish or elsewhere, can benefit,” says Gretchen R. Crowe, Our Sunday Visitor editor-in-chief. “Each issue is an investment into the continuing formation and growth of today’s clergy.”
