Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem is an Oasis of Peace, Joy, and Love in the Holy Land

As we enter into the Advent season, we wanted to take this opportunity to bring to your attention an organization that is doing life-saving work in the Holy Land. The Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to deliver life, peace, and hope in the Holy Land.

The foundation’s primary program is Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem — a Catholic teaching hospital with a state-of-the-art maternity and neonatal critical care center serving poor and at-risk women, infants, and children throughout the West Bank of Palestine. Located just 1,500 steps from the birthplace of Christ, the mission and work of Holy Family Hospital is evoked in a particularly special way during the Advent and Christmas seasons.

Just as the original manager provided shelter to Mary, Joseph and Jesus during their time of need, so does Holy Family Hospital which embraces and accepts all who seek care, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or ability to pay. No one is ever turned away.

Another unique aspect of the hospital is how it serves as an instrument of peace in a region that has endured decades of political conflict and strife. Christians and Muslims are united at Holy Family Hospital as they work together every day fostering peace through medicine.

Michele Burke Bowe, President of the foundation, is located in Washington, DC and is available to discuss the following topics:

Proximity to the Birthplace of Jesus: Located just 1500 steps from the birthplace of Christ, the mission and work of Holy Family Hospital is evoked in a particularly special way during the Advent and Christmas seasons. This Catholic teaching hospital serves a population where most are likely descendants of the shepherds who ran to be at the side of the Christ Child over 2,000 years ago.

A Modern-Day Manager: Just as the original manager provided shelter to Mary, Joseph and Jesus during their time of need, so does Holy Family Hospital which embraces and accepts all who seek care, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or ability to pay. No one is ever turned away.

An Oasis of Peace: In a region that has endured decades of political conflict and strife, Christians and Muslims are united at Holy Family Hospital as they work together every day fostering peace through medicine. Holy Family Hospital provides more than 170 jobs for Palestinian families as Bethlehem’s second largest employer.

History of the Hospital and Connection to JPII: The French Daughters of Charity founded Holy Family Hospital as a general hospital in 1888 to minister Bethlehem’s sick. The Hospital operated until 1985 when political and economic factors forced the sisters to close its doors. In 1989, at the request of Saint John Paul II, the Order of Malta took over the operation and management of the Hospital, converting it into a specialized maternity unit. Since then, Holy Family Hospital has grown from 850 annual births to over 4,300.

A State-of-the-Art Facility with Lifesaving Health Care Programs:  The Hospital contains the only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in all of Palestine,  saving over 300 babies annually while providing postnatal care for mothers and infants for as long as needed.  The Hospital has a Mobile Clinic serving those in the most desperate regions of the area to include U.N. refugee camps.  The Hospital also operates Well Woman Clinic to support diabetes screening and treatment as well as care for post-menopausal women to include gynecological check-ups, surgeries, and cancer screening.
